Following graduation, Martyn practised as Hodges Haxworth (with J.C.W. Hodges),  specialising in hospital and health care buildings, and later worked with Paul Shepheard. Hodges Haxworth designed the Pennine Warehouse development, Stourton, near Leeds, 1975; housing in Balaam Street, Plaistow; and the rehabilitation of the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel. The practice later became the Hodges Haxworth Jones Partnership.
