Eric de Mare Photographic Collection Digitisation

The AA Archives is embarking upon a new project to systematically digitise and make accessible the extensive photographic archive of Eric De Maré – a collection gifted to the AA Foundation by Sir Michael Hopkins in 1989. De Mare was described in his 2002 Guardian obituary as ‘the finest UK architectural photographer of the mid 20th Century’ and the collection consists of c3,900 negatives, of which currently just 3.6% are digitised and available online. This important collection highlights the breadth of De Mare’s professional interests, including not only the canals and early industrial architecture that he is renowned for but also photography of country houses, landscape gardens and sculptural elements.
